Kevin Burns, CIO/Director of Information Technology, City of Miami, Florida

Kevin has served as the Chief Information Officer/Director of Information Technology for the City of Miami since July 2014 and over 20 years of experience in progressively greater leadership positions. Focused on strategic alignment, technical innovations, customer service, service delivery, and business relationships that provide enhanced and efficient process improvements and customer experiences.

A proven leader with extensive experience from a 20-year career in the U.S. Army and over 20 years in the corporate and local government. Kevin has a strong background in Public Safety, Land Management, GIS, and Human Resources. Kevin has also been a keen role player in bringing Smart Cities initiatives into the City of Miami.

Key positions held: Chief Information Officer/Director of Information Technology – Serving a business population of ~1.5 million with an annual operating budget of $1B and a $17M Information Technology budget. Leading a team of 93 IT professionals and supporting about 5,000 employees. Charged with creating, planning, and executing the strategic, innovative, and day to day technology of the Magic City which is a technology hub and gateway to the Caribbean, Latin, and South America. International Public Speaker on Smart Cities and Local Government Information Technology solutions.

Deputy CIO – Managing the daily operations (keeping the lights on), development and implementation of new systems, and managing over 60 personnel actions.

Prior to the City, Kevin spent a 20-year career with the U.S. Army serving in challenging positions with prestigious units such as the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, NY; 8th US Army, Seoul, Korea; 172nd Infantry Division and US Army Cold Regions Test Center, both in Alaska.

As a member of the information technology leadership team he assists in planning, developing and implementing a comprehensive citywide information technology strategy, technical architecture, and creates and execute short-term and long-term plans and projects to be implemented within the architectural framework.
• Former Founder/CEO for SOS IT Services, Inc. a Technology company that became the IT department for Small to Midsize companies in the South Florida area.
• Former CIO/Corporate Director of ERP for Watsco, Inc. – a Fortune 1000 HVAC company with $1.9B in annual sales, 16 subsidiaries, hundreds of locations throughout 36 states and 3000+ employees.
• Former VP of Information Technology for Beverage Canners company (acquired by National Beverage Corp.) – the 4th largest branded carbonated soft-drink company in the US in the manufacturing, bottling and distribution of soft-drinks, with $550M in annual sales, 12 manufacturing facilities around the country in 13 states, and 1,200 employees.
