Brownfields are abandoned, inactive, or
under-used industrial or commercial properties
where actual or perceived environmental
issues complicate their sale, expansion, and/or
redevelopment.
A 'Brownfield Site,' with
certain legal exclusions and additions, is
defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (USEPA) as real property, the expansion,
redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential
presence of a hazardous substance,
pollutant, or contaminant.
Cleaning up and reusing local
Brownfields has far-reaching, positive
impacts that not only
contribute to reducing urban sprawl but also
reduce undesirable activities such as illegal
dumping. By attending to the environmental
priorities of assessing, cleaning up, and
reusing our Brownfields, we are effectively
addressing quality of life issues and associated
social problems.
