Commissioner Francis Suarez to Honor Damas de Blanco with Street Designation

(Miami, FL November 22, 2016) - On Wednesday, November 23, 2016, City of Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez will honor the Damas de Blanco, a movement founded in Cuba in 2003 by the wives and female relatives of jailed dissidents, with a street designation ceremony. Representing the fight against human rights violations in Cuba, the Damas de Blanco attend mass in Cuba on Sundays dressed in white and peacefully march through the streets of Havana on a weekly basis, bringing international attention to the ongoing injustices suffered by the island nation.

"I am privileged to recognize this group of women, who are leading the way for equality in Cuba," said Commissioner Suarez, "and on Thanksgiving eve, this designation is just one small way that we can offer our thanks as a Cuban community for the work they continue to do on behalf of our Cuban brothers and sisters."
